Crime on the increase
This follows just one day after police minister Bheki Cele confirmed that cases of murder and attempted murder are increasing in the Western Cape. As per the latest report, the Western Cape has the highest murder rate.
According to Cele, there had been an increase of 6.6% in murders between October and December 2020, while Kraaifontein recorded the highest number of murders in the country during the same period, followed by Delft, Umlazi, Inanda and Nyanga.
The rise in crime in other parts of the country was a cause for concern as well, Cele said:
“I remain concerned about Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and the Western Cape provinces which these stats show are regressing in their fight against crime.”
He wanted to assure South Africans that officials are “improving services and responses, at station level on a daily basis”.
“As the SAPS, we are motivated that numerous life sentences have been handed down for crimes committed against women and children.”
