Ravichandran Ashwin sweeps past Jacques Kallis in key all-rounder stat

Cricket stats – like all numbers – can be misleading at times and used to paint any picture you wish.

But, facts and facts and following his superb performance against England in the second Test in Chennai, Ravichandran Ashwin has now broken out of a tie with former Proteas great Jacques Kallis in one particularly key all-rounder category.

It’s a given that an all-rounder’s role is to shine with the bat and ball (decent fielding is a bonus too).

So, the category for ‘most five-wicket hauls in an innings AND centuries in the same Test’ is a key one.

After his 106 and 5/43 in India’s 317-run win over England, Ravichandran Ashwin has now scored a ton and taken at least five wickets in an innings in the same Test on three occasions, according to stats guru Andrew Samson.

That’s one more than an illustrious list of four players: Jacques Kallis, Gary Sobers, Mushtaq Mohammad and Shakib Al Hasan.

However, still out in front with five is Ian Botham.

For the record, there’s no suggesting that 34-year-old Ravichandran Ashwin is a better all-rounder than any of the above-mentioned players.
